Throughout the centuries, Scotland’s arts and culture have not only offered images of men playing bagpipe music, tartan kilts and paintings of the Scottish green highlands. Scottish arts has given the world plenty of richness to share from summer international music festivals, beautifully written poetry by Robert Burns, fine arts from contemporary artist Jim Lambie and architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Often when people think of a Scottish painting, they will most probably picture “The Monarch of Glen”, a painting of a proud large red deer up on the highlands surrounded by dramatic cloudy sky. Painted by Sir Edwin Landseer in 1851, even though he was an English painter he spent most of this life in Scotland. Today this painting can be found on display in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, this painting is a national treasure. The painting has become an inspiration used for logos, advertising for whisky and in popular culture.
